Waves

As the bullets ripped
through her back,
it felt like ocean waves
flattened her.
Landing palms down in hot sand,
she remembered
red and white stripes
on beach umbrellas
and her blue bathing suit
with tiny white stars.

This was an extra creative writing contest run in collaboration with Noel Williams who has a residency at the Bank Street Arts Centre in Sheffield. Noel has Arts Council support for the project (To learn more about this read his blog: http://poetryoffthepage.wordpress.com/ or visit the Bank Arts Centre website: http://www.bankstreetarts.com/)

Noel says, on judging the contest:

'the poem that came top of the list was “Waves”. The image and the story were like nothing else submitted, and the idea, which has a message of a kind, yet a message subtly delivered, so you can decide not to hear it if you want to, works very well and does it just through two sentences and a single vivid image. And, like all the best poems, it leaves space for the reader, to find their own version of what’s being said, to make their own sense of it. Spoken aloud, it could be quite moving.

Thanks to everyone who submitted their work. I hope to use all the poems that were entered in my project. Updates will be posted on my blog at: http://poetryoffthepage.wordpress.com '
